Isn't The Colon Just a Waste Tube?

After spending countless of hours sitting in colon hydrotherapy sessions with clients, I often get asked the question that has flirted with the hearts and minds of nearly everyone I have treated (me included): if I have all of this waste inside of my colon, why doesn’t my body just let it go? It is a good question. And my answer is always: if the body could, it would. You cut yourself, bruise your knee, break a bone, and you don’t have to tell your bone cells to knit together or your blood cells to form a blood clot to stop the bleeding. Your cells simply know what to do. The deeper question then is: why doesn’t my colon release everything it’s holding?

Some people would then ask: but isn’t it just a tube that funnels waste out of us? I wish because then elimination would a total breeze for all. But the colon is actually one of the most complex organs in the body. Here’s why:

1. Multiple roles, not just waste removal

• Water & electrolyte balance – The colon reabsorbs water and key minerals (sodium, potassium,

chloride). A small imbalance can affect hydration, blood pressure, and heart rhythm.

• Storage & elimination – It has to hold stool safely without constant leakage, yet also release it on command. That balance requires intricate muscular and nervous coordination.

2. Gut microbiome “universe”

• The colon is home to trillions of microbes—more cells than in the human body itself.

• These microbes help digest fibers, make vitamins (K, some B’s), produce neurotransmitters, and train the immune system.

• Shifts in this ecosystem (dysbiosis) are linked to IBS, IBD, obesity, diabetes, even mood disorders.

3. Immune system powerhouse

• Roughly 70% of immune activity in the gut is concentrated in the colon.

• It constantly distinguishes between harmless food/microbes and dangerous pathogens.

• When this balance breaks down, you can see autoimmune issues like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

4. Nervous system complexity

• The colon has its own “second brain” (the enteric nervous system).

• Millions of neurons regulate peristalsis, secretion, and sensation—communicating with the brain via the vagus nerve. That’s why stress, anxiety, or trauma can strongly affect colon function.

5. Diseases are tricky to diagnose and manage

• Colon cancer, polyps, diverticulitis, IBS, IBD, chronic constipation—all can look similar at first. Some conditions are silent until advanced (like colorectal cancer).

In short: the colon is complex because it’s not just a waste pipe—it’s a finely tuned organ of hydration, immunity, microbial balance, and mind-body interaction. And maybe you can see more clearly now as to why cleansing your colon via colonics aka colon hydrotherapy might be one of the most single-handedly easiest things you can do for your entire well being. You can call or text 917-246-8909 if you want more info. :-)
